The Lyon debeaker is recognized and used throughout the world as reliable and safe method to stop cannibalism, picking, fighting and egg loss. At 6 weeks the hens are usually debeaked on a beak support, which is a crossbar. The beak is placed on the support, and the hot blade cuts through and sears the beak with the cutting edge striking the beak support. At a younger age birds are generally debeaked with gauge plate, a thin, stainless steel plate with a hole through which the beak is inserted. The blade moves behind the plate thereby cutting the beak.
